1) BlackPink

BlackPink, often stylized as BLACKPINK, is the highest-charting girl group in K-Pop history. The four-member juggernaut consisting of Jennie, Lisa,  Jisoo, and Rosé made their debut in 2016. 

Their super hit single “Boombayah” became their first number-one single on Billboard World Digital Songs chart and is currently the most-viewed debut music video by a Korean act on YouTube. They have several other laurels up their sleeve. In 2017, BlackPink’s comeback song “As If It’s Your Last” accrued over 14 million views on YouTube in less than 24 hours. Remarkable!

2) Red Velvet

Reigning queens in the K-Pop world, Red Velvet is one of the best Kpop girl groups with the most number-one albums on the music charts. What’s more, Red Velvet has amassed numerous awards for music, popularity and choreography, and popularity including Golden Disc New Artist Award. 

Red Velvet debuted in 2014 with four members: Wendy, Irene, Seulgi, and Joy. However, a fifth member, Yeri, joined the group in 2015.

Loona, often stylized as LOOΠΔ, is a rising K-pop Girl group comprising twelve members who were initially revealed periodically corresponding to their Korean names. Loona came to the fore with their pre-debut project in October 2016 where each member released promotional singles over the next 18 months. 

Loona is divided into three sub-units namely, Loona 1/3, Loona Odd Eye Circle and Loona yyxy. Their debut EP as a full band was released in 2018 titled [+ +]. The lead singles off the album which received widespread acclaim were “favOriTe” and the pop track “Hi High.”

Gfriend is a six-member girl group formed in 2015 comprising six members namely Eunha, Yuju, Yerin, Sowon, SinB, and Umji.

Also known as Girlfriend, the girl band has accumulated numerous female rookie awards and took first place on many music shows in 2016. They are among a select few crop of Korean Girl bands whose pre-orders for their fourth album (The Awakening) have exceeded 100,000 units worldwide!

7) Everglow

Composed of members from various countries, Everglow is a multinational Kpop girl group managed by Yuehua Entertainment, a multinational talent agency from Beijing.  It comprises 6 members: Mia, Yiren, Onda, Aisha, E:U, and Sihyeon.

Interesting, each member of Everglow maintains a specific position in the whole group during live performances, interviews, etc. They made their debut in March 2019 with their album called “Arrival of Everglow”. Eveglow is often touted as one of the best Kpop girl groups among the new crop of Kpop bands.

8) Itzy

Consisting of 5 members: Ryujin, Lia, Yuna, Yeji, and Chaeryeong, Itzy made their debut in February 2019 and quickly rose to prominence since they are managed by Korea’s biggest K-pop agency, Miss A.

Part of Itzy’s meteoric rise could also be attributed to its members such as Chaeryeong and Ryujin competing on several television shows. Hardcore Kpop aficionados may also recall Chaeryeong, who appeared in several K-pop shows such as 2013’s K-Pop Star 3 and Sixteen, whereas Ryujin appeared in the show called Mixnine. Hence, most of the members of Itzy were already quite well-known before the band’s formation.

9) EXID

Shortened form for “Exceed in Dreaming”, EXID is a girl group comprising five incredibly talented members namely, Hani, Hyerin, LE, Soliji, and Jeonghwa. Although EXID debuted in 2012 with the single “Holla”, it was not until 2014, that the group gained popularity thanks to their successful single “Up & Down”. 

However, EXID have now amassed a dedicated fanbase and are one the best KPOP girl groups rising up the ladder of superstardom. 

10) Iz*One

Rounding off the list is Iz*One, a K-pop/J-pop girl group formed after the popular competition show Produce 48 (also known as the third season of Produce 101). 

Iz*One consists of twelve members who collectively made their debut in 2018. It wasn’t long until they met with huge commercial success by selling over 225,000 units and landing up in the second place on South Korea’s prestigious Gaon Album Chart. Subsequently, Iz*One lapped up several awards including best New Artist of the Year.
